Piezoelectric plate

Piezoelectric plate

Piezoelectric plate converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. It converts the pressure that is applied to it, to electrical energy. Piezoelectric materials are the materials that can conduct electricity when put under force (example – quartz). Basically, when these materials are applied with force, their ions redistribute the arrangement and the material becomes polarised, which hence generates an electric field for a short period of time. These plates can be used to make a lot of projects and appliances.
A piezoelectric plate consists of two terminals, negative and positive, and connecting wires to each terminal.

How to use

Take a piezoelectric plate, and connect its terminals in the circuit. Now, when the plate is applied with force, it’ll generate voltage which can be noticed by putting a LED, motor or by measuring it through a multimeter.

Common Applications

1. Used in piezoelectric motors.
2. Used in piezoelectric buzzers.

Some example projects that students can try out in the ATL Lab

1. Connect a LED with a piezoelectric plate and observe the effect after applying force to it.
2. Generate electricity using Piezoelectric Plate and lighty an LED –

3. Smart Shoes using Piezoelectric Plates –

Safety Measures to follow

1. Don’t use these plates with appliances that require constant voltage supply.
