A berg strip, also known as a pin header is a connector strip which is used in various kinds of circuit boards. There are majorly two types of pin headers used:-
1. Male berg strips
2. Female berg strips
The usage of both depends on the kind of circuit needed. Mostly, whenever they’re used on circuit boards, they’re soldered to the board and then can be used to connect components to it or to connect multiple boards together. Arduino Uno boards have female berg strips present on it for making the connections.
How to use
Take the required berg strip, either male or female, that you need to solder over the circuit board. The strips could be cut in required size with the use of pliers. Always make sure it is held intact while cutting, to avoid any sort of cracking. Once cut, place them on the board accordingly, and solder each pin’s base to the board. Once done, it can then be used to make connections as per the requirement.
Common Applications
1. Making connections on a perf board
2. Connecting different boards with microcontroller boards like Ardujno Uno or Raspberry Pi
Some example projects that students can try out in the ATL Lab
1. Create a small circuit board of choice using male pin headers and then connect it to the Arduino Uno board.
Safety Measures to follow
1. Hold the strip intact with some plier while cutting it or else it could cause a slanting crack which would then damage the strip.
2. The base of pin headers is sharp so make sure it’s not poked while using.
